About John

I believe a strong community is built with leaders who seek input from residents, business leaders, City staff and the hundreds of people who contribute their time and skills to keep us healthy, happy and safe. The fabric of our community will be stronger when we value our diversity and foster contributions from many.

Why I’m Running for Mayor

It has been a privilege to contribute my time, energy and leadership skills to Hudson during the past seven years while serving as the Alderman for Hudson’s District 5.  The time spent on City Council and on numerous boards and committees have given me first-hand knowledge and experience with the “ins and outs” of city business.

Much has been accomplished since 2011 when I was first elected, and overall I feel Hudson has done quite well as a community during this time.  But I have also witnessed some “hiccups”, and these are areas I have identified for improvement. As Mayor, I will make sure progress in these areas are at the top of the city’s plan.

Hudson Government Experience

I’m currently serving as Common Council President and serve on:

  • Finance Committee
  • Chair, Public Works Committee
  • Urban Forestry Board
  • Chair, Trail Advisory Committee

During my seven years on the Common Council, I’ve also served on:

  • Public Utilities Commission
  • Public Safety Committee
  • Fire Board
  • Cable Board

My Story

I was born in Oscoda, MI, and graduated from high school in New Ulm, MN and from UW-Madison with a degree in Cartography (the science of mapmaking).  My wife, Sarah Atkins, and I have been married since 1994. Sarah and I are both passionate about this community. Sarah was born in Stillwater and raised in Afton, so she has a lifetime appreciation of the St. Croix Valley which I am now happy to share.  When we moved to Hudson from Madison in 1995, we were “coming home” not only to the area, but also to a large family and many lifelong friends. My daughter and her husband live in Atlanta, Georgia with our first grandchild.

We started a small business in architectural sales in 1996 and moved our business offices to downtown Hudson in 2001.  As an entrepreneur, I understand budget constraints, making difficult choices and finding creative, long-term solutions.  My previous professional experiences include GIS software sales and technical consulting. I have a broad mix of skills, experiences and leadership roles from which I will continue to draw upon as Hudson’s Mayor.
